PCAN seeks to bring together physicians from across the province to explore, share, and support strategies that enhance quality in surgical services. Members stay connected through webinars, emails, and a highly anticipated annual PCAN Summit.
Through the PCAN Innovation Fund, we provide funding and project support to empower perioperative teams to implement or spread quality-improvement and innovation ideas to elevate surgical care in BC.

PCAN Summit 2026
We are pleased to announce that registration for the 2026 PCAN Summit is now open! The summit will take place on November 1 and 2, 2026, at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver.
The annual PCAN Summit brings together leading clinical, policy, and quality improvement experts in perioperative care, providing a premier platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Discover the impactful experiences shared by attendees in our past events.
The PCAN Summit agenda will have a wide variety of presentations, all centred around surgical priorities. With hands-on workshops and engaging discussions, this event is not to be missed!

As a British Columbia physician, how do I submit my sessional time & expenses for the PCAN Summit 2026?
Physicians who have registered to attend the PCAN Summit can submit sessional time and expenses via the Facility Engagement Management System (FEMS). For details on what's covered, please read through the PCAN Summit Sessional and Expense Policy.
Important reminders:
- A maximum of eight sessional hours is supported for British Columbia physicians on the full day PCAN Summit, November 2, 2026.
- Reimbursement for travel expenses is only available to physicians who practice in BC and live outside of Metro Vancouver.
- Please be sure to read the details below on guidelines for your accepted expenses.
- Physicians must submit expenses within three months of the event (by February 2, 2027).
- Physicians must provide detailed receipts of expenses, which will be uploaded by type of expense into the portal. Pre-save your receipts to your smartphone or electronic device. For example, if you have three taxi receipts, please take one scan or picture of those three expenses together.
- If there is anything unusual about your submission, please explain in the notes section.

What funding is available to British Columbian physicians for reimbursement of related costs?
British Columbian physicians can receive funding for costs associated with attending the PCAN Summit 2026 through the Specialist Services Committee, based on the following criteria:

BC physicians attending the PCAN Summit on November 2, 2026 are eligible to claim the following funding support:
Registration
Complimentary registration for physicians and all attendees of the PCAN Summit 2026. Please note that space is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with physicians having priority registration.Sessional time
Maximum of eight sessional hours is supported for physicians attending the PCAN Summit on November 2, 2026. Travel and preparation time are not supported.Meals
Where a meal is provided without charge, no claim for the meal can be made. Refer to the SSC PCAN Summit 2026 Expense Guidelines for details on the meal per diem.Travel and accommodation
Reimbursement is available for travel exceeding a 50km return trip. Travel expenses will be reimbursed for the most expeditious and economical route of travel. Vehicle expenses will be reimbursed at the current rate ($0.63/km) for private vehicle mileage incurred. Accommodation will be provided to those physicians who live outside of Metro Vancouver (Vancouver, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Richmond, Delta, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, White Rock, Surrey, Maple Ridge, Langley, Port Moody, Anmore, and Belcarra) for one night, November 2, 2025. A maximum of $410 per night (including tax) will be reimbursed for accommodation on November 1, 2026. The Perioperative Clinical Action Network (PCAN) invites and involves a diverse range of stakeholders, ensuring that all multidisciplinary network members have a voice. The PCAN Advisory Committee will include representation from the Doctors of BC, Ministry of Health, health authorities and patient representatives.
PCAN members stay connected through webinars, emails, and a highly anticipated annual PCAN Summit. The PCAN Summit agenda will have a rich variety of presentations, all centred around surgical priorities. With hands-on workshops and engaging discussions, it is an event not to be missed!
PCAN also supports innovative improvement activities by providing successful applicant innovation funding. The PCAN Innovation Fund empowers perioperative project teams to explore creative solutions aimed at enhancing surgical services for British Columbians.

PCAN Innovation Fund

Applications for PCAN Innovation Project Funding 2026/27 will close January 31, 2026.
A British Columbian licensed physician may apply for the PCAN Innovation Fund online via our online application form.
These types of projects are chosen through a competitive intake process where the application will be assessed on:
- The level of innovation in the perioperative services.
- The scope, expected impact, and spread of the deliverable.
- The evidence in support of the project e.g., scientific merit, existing research, and evidence.
- Preparedness of the project team for the proposed project.
- The impact of the project towards the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Quintuple Aim.
Application process:
Before applying, the PCAN Innovation Project physician lead shall read the PCAN Innovation Fund Guideline and search The Exchange database of quality improvement projects across BC to ensure that there are no previously funded or completed innovation projects that are too similar to their proposed plan.
All applications are confidential. As instructed in the online application, to better understand the proposed project, we require:
- Project description and a summary of the problem it will address.
- Aim statement.
- Estimated timeline and budget.
- Description of the support and the quality improvement qualifications of the team.
- Description of three measures used to demonstrate the path to improvement.
All applications will be screened. If the project is not expected to move forward in the application process, the physician lead will be notified. Further details will be required if the project is accepted to proceed in the application process. Additional instructions regarding project management documentation and reporting will be provided.
Agreement:
The successful recipient of SSC PCAN Innovation funding will be required to review and sign a project agreement. This agreement will summarize the signatories, innovation deliverables, timeline, budget, and specified funding structure/process. All PCAN Innovation Fund projects must follow Doctors of BC's policies and guidelines.
Financial reporting:
It is the responsibility of the PCAN Innovation physician lead and any other team members to submit claims for their sessional time or expenses. Physicians will submit claims through the Facility Engagement Management System (FEMS). Non-physicians will submit a claims form via email to sscbc@doctorsofbc.ca.
Each project will be assigned a project specialist who will assist project physicians in setting up their FEMS account. They will work with the physician to maintain financial logs, budget, and submit monthly project status reports.
