Chilliwack leads the way with groundbreaking housing initiative to attract physicians

Posted on Apr 14, 2025

Chilliwack, B.C., is redefining how smaller communities address the family doctor shortage with an innovative strategy that’s getting attention across the province. While physician recruitment remains a widespread challenge, Chilliwack is demonstrating that creativity and collaboration can pave the way for sustainable health care solutions.

Smaller cities often face dual challenges: attracting doctors and ensuring they stay. Retirements, growing patient loads, and limited coverage options have left gaps in Chilliwack’s health care system. To address this, a local partnership has developed a forward-thinking program that not only fills immediate needs but also builds a foundation for long-term success

The Essential Health Care Workers' Accommodation Program, a collaboration between the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice – a Family Practice Services Committee initiative, Chilliwack Medical Staff Association funded through Facility Engagement – an initiative under the Specialist Services Committee initiative, Fraser Health Authority, Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, and Algra Bros Developments, offers visiting health care professionals furnished, short-term housing for just $50 per night. The costs for the condo and the furnishings were supported through a collaborative cost-sharing arrangement by community partners. This simple yet impactful initiative is transforming recruitment efforts in the region, enhancing support for health care professionals.

Unlike traditional recruitment strategies that focus solely on financial incentives, this program prioritizes comfort, community integration, and flexibility. Visiting physicians – including locums and specialists – can stay in a fully equipped condominium steps away from Chilliwack General Hospital. The convenient location, in the heart of Chilliwack, allows doctors to enjoy both the convenience and the unique lifestyle benefits the community offers – from breathtaking outdoor recreation to a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Dr Sharon Choopa, a visiting pediatric locum, highlights the program's impact: “I have had a wonderful experience doing locum work in Pediatrics at Chilliwack General Hospital. What makes it even more worthwhile is the lovely, very convenient condo that is available for physicians, just a few minutes from the hospital. This is a great initiative.”

The program is already attracting health care professionals considering their next move. By lowering barriers and showcasing Chilliwack’s supportive environment, the initiative increases the likelihood that visiting doctors will choose to settle in the community. Specialists in pediatrics, internal medicine, and psychiatry have already filled critical shifts, improving care access for residents and reducing the strain on local physicians.

The Chilliwack Division of Family Practice sees this program as a model for other communities facing similar shortages. By moving beyond conventional tactics, the initiative focuses on creating meaningful connections between physicians and the community. Instead of offering temporary placements, the program provides immersive experiences that highlight the professional and personal advantages of living and working in Chilliwack. From collaborative work environments to strong community networks, participants gain a holistic view of the opportunities available.

While physician shortages persist across B.C., Chilliwack’s approach proves that collaboration and innovation can drive real change. By reimagining how health care professionals are welcomed and supported, Chilliwack is setting a new standard – one that other communities may soon look to replicate. For doctors seeking more than just a place to practice, Chilliwack offers a home and a future.
