Multidisciplinary Fragile X clinic

Lead
Dr. Jonathan Down/ Dr. Gudrun Aubertin
Health Authority
Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA)

Aim: Initiate a multi-disciplinary Fragile X (most common form of inherited intellectual disability) clinic to better assess and treat patients and family.

Summary: The Fragile X Project achieved the primary goals of increased awareness in the community, increased access to care for affected individuals and their families, and collaboration among health care providers to both increase clinical expertise and consequently improve patient care. The success of the conference was the biggest accomplishment.  The benefits of this project are likely to be apparent for some time to come.  Unfortunately the ability to continue to communicate the availability of our clinical services to physicians and families in the community is limited by the inability of the health authority to publically allow a “Fragile X clinic”. However the physician leads intend to continue to collaborate and provide joint appointments as much as possible for future patient referrals.
