Provincial pre/peri/post-operative Pacemaker Project - assessment and standardization of care

Lead
Dr. Jamil Bashir | Cardiac Surgery
Health Authority
Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA)

Aim: To establish a coordinated network to improve the pre/peri/post-operative care of the BC pacemaker patient.

Summary:
1. Develop and communicate an ideal state for the BC system of PM care with full engagement of key stakeholders to form a framework of service coordination, accountability, sustainability and monitoring of system continuous improvement.
2. Reduce repeat procedure rates by increasing awareness of appropriate patient indications, device and mode selection criteria and standardization of peri-operative protocols.
3. Reduce complication rates through standardization of perioperative protocols and improved identification, management and follow-up by providers and patients.
4. Improve follow-up care by ensuring that every patient has a follow-up plan identified before procedural discharge.
5. Improve consistency of implanter and implanting team standards by establishing guidelines for credentialing and competency for pacemaker insertion.
