The SSC made up to $8 million available to fund one-time projects (not ongoing) initiated by specialists. The committee sought proposals from specialists and specialist sections detailing how each would use this funding to improve specialist services. In all, the SSC received 166 proposals the scopes of which ranged considerably from employing allied health care providers, equipment upgrades/purchases, developing IT/EMR, new health service delivery methods, and funding physician specific projects. The SSC received many worthy proposals and it was a difficult task to prioritize proposals for funding.
Each project will document its steps through a compressive evaluation and assessment process to determine whether the projects achieved their intended goals, objectives and outcomes. A key factor will be to learn from the result and experiences of the physician-led projects and establish best practices, approaches and strategies that can be applied more broadly to other communities across the province.
